讲述几个年轻农民到大城市闯荡故事，几个年轻人既没有受尽磨难最后当上老板飞黄腾达奇遇，也没有城市里受尽欺负痛不欲生辛酸血泪，而就是非常写实“简单生活”，用导演武斐话说是不同于刘老根、马大帅等个别成功农民形象：“农民题材难就难它真实性，赵本山‘刘老根’、‘马大帅’是一些成功农民形象，然而大多数农民是最平凡地生活着。《我是农民》侧重于描写从农村来城市青年人，我不想给他们开药方，他们是每年进入城市几千万边缘人中一部分，他们生活本身就充满戏剧性，无需去编造什么。”敢于说这话是因为武斐自己就出身农民，为让年轻演员们也能有感性认识，他甚至带着几个演员去“下乡务农”体验生活。武斐觉得这也是诚意一部分，“我们创作视角是平视，或者说是朋友式，而不是居高临下。我们想以朋友、平等关怀方式来写这群从农村来、想城里扎根人。”。Kala azar describes of a place that cannot sustain animal life any longer.
